Coat of Arms USCGC CAMPBELL

Coat of Arms USCGC CAMPBELL derived from authentic heraldic sources and presented to the ship by CDR Samuel Eliot Morrison, USNR, who at the time was Historian for US Naval Operations. He sailed in CAMPBELL on a convoy escort mission from the United States to Gibraltar in November 1944.

Shortly after leaving the ship having taken a liking to it and its dog mascot, Sinbad, he presented the Coat of Arms via the mails. The scene on the shield depicts a shield a type of ship employed in heraldry, together with a gyronny of eight, orange and sable, which is the gold and black hand at the top The lymphad and/or the gyronny are customary emblems for the coat of arms of the Campbell family in medieval coats of arms, helmets were used to surmount the shield. In this instance, a ship’s sound powered telephone talkers helmet was selected for artistic reasons, Sinbad, the ships mascot, was placed above all as a crest. The scene on the shield commemorates the attack on CAMPBELL on 11 May 1944 while she was escorting a convoy in the Mediterranean.
